Although Ford’s Lincoln and Mercury brands have been wallowing in mediocrity for the past few decades, both brands have actually been showing some signs of life as of late. While Mercury hasn’t had a unique vehicle in eons, the brand’s quality is now top notch and continues to win award after award. Lincoln has a bit more fight left in it and is in the midst of a vast product rollout. That rollout looks to continue into the foreseeable future, and could actually include a new compact for the luxury brand.
According to Ford’s group vice president for global product development, Derrick Kuzak, Ford is considering giving the Lincoln brand a compact model. “We do think that there is room for a smaller car in the Lincoln brand,” he told Automotive News.
Kuzak didn’t go into details, but it’s quite possible that the Lincoln C-segment car could be based on the European Ford Kuga crossover vehicle. The Kuga will likely replace the aging Ford Escape early next decade, and could for the basis for a new Lincoln model.
The addition of a Kuga-based would give Lincoln a competitor in every crossover segment, and would complement the MKX and upcoming MKT. The new model would also boast impressive fuel mileage, which pretty much every U.S. customer is now looking for. If the new model does get the go ahead, look for it to arrive beside the new Ford model sometime early next decade.
